‘A Sacred Month’ by Nur Houda Or

If I had to choose a favorite month,

it would always be you.

In a crumbling and thunderous world,

you are peaceful and tranquil,

you are right and true.

On a hot and burning summer day,

you are raindrops and the cool wind.

With you, my soul is aligned,

you are a blessing, so unconfined.

Each day you teach me about key values in life:

When I’m full after three bites, ‘see that taught me transiency

When my stomach hurts and my head aches,

see that taught me empathy

When charity and prayer are spread around the world,

see that taught me morality

When prayer is performed until late in the night,

see that taught me spirituality

When news is spread that Muslims fast around the world,

see that taught me unity

When day after day you commit to faith, prayer and righteous acts,

see that taught me durability

And when you end, dear Ramadan,

I pray to carry all your lessons with me,

so next year when we meet again, in sha Allah,

I will learn even more from thee.

  1. This is a beautiful poem. I’m not Muslim, but art like this helps to understand how beautiful and important Ramadan is. How it feels to fast and to have a faith that you can hold on to. The author should be proud of herself.
